Stafford Township Unveils Historic Rail Car

Restored Rail Car in Stafford Township to be used as Classroom and Meeting Space

Eight years ago a corroded old Central Railroad of  New Jersey rail car was found in the woods of the nowRail Car defunct military site, Camp Evans in Wall Township. The Stafford Township Historical Society decided they wanted to bring it back to Manahawkin and restore it.

It took 6 years and $60,000 to refurbish the 73-foot rail car, which was supposed to take much less time and money, but the restoration, is finally complete. In the next few months, the rail car will be opened and used as a classroom and meeting space with room for 70 people and comes with all the mod-cons - seating, heating, air conditioning and television which will allow Stafford Township children to learn about our history.

Rail CarThe rail car was originally built back in 1922 for the Central Railroad of New Jersey and was used to carry passengers North Jersey and Pennsylvania to The Jersey Shore from the 1850's to the 1970's.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey, commonly known as the Jersey Central Lines or CNJ, with origins in the 1830s, lasting until 1976 when it was absorbed into Conrail with the other bankrupt railroads of the Northeastern United States. Its main line ran from Jersey City west through New Jersey to Phillipsburg and across the Delaware River to Easton and Scranton in Pennsylvania. Branches stretched into southern New Jersey, The Jersey Shore and to the Delaware Bay.

The CNJ was acquired by the Philadelphia and Reading Railway in 1883. Though that was later canceled, the Reading continued to exert major influence over the CNJ, and used it for its New York City terminal.   The Central Railroad was extremely important to the growth of southern Ocean County and started the tourism trade for the area including Long Beach Island.  For more information on the CNJ, click here.

Wild Turkeys in New Jersey

Wild Turkeys on The Jersey Shore

Wild Tom As a boy growing up on The Jersey Shore, we'd be out looking for animals, whether actually hunting or just observing, there was always waterfowl, rabbits, squirrels, deer, the occasional pheasant and very rarely a fox, but never a wild turkey.  There wasn't even a slim chance of seeing a turkey other than the butterball my mom brought home for Thanksgiving.  The only place I had seen a wild turkey was at a relative's cabin in northwestern Pennsylvania. It was a rarity for anyone to see ANY wild turkeys anywhere in the entire state.  Today, it's quite a different story as the American Wild Turkey as made a strong comeback on The Jersey Shore, Ocean County and throughout New Jersey.

The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife's Turkey Restoration Project represents one of the greatest wildlife management success stories in the history of the state.

By the mid-1800s, turkeys had all but disappeared in New Jersey due to habitat changes and killing forWild Turkeys food. Division biologists, in cooperation with the NJ Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, reintroduced wild turkeys in 1977 with the release of 22 birds. In 1979 biologists and technicians began to live-trap and re-locate birds to establish populations throughout the state. By 1981 the population was able to support a spring hunting season, and in December, 1997, a limited fall season was initiated.

There is now an abundance of wild turkeys throughout the state with turkeys found wherever there is suitable habitat. Even in South Jersey, where wild turkeys had been struggling just a few years ago, intensive restoration efforts have improved population numbers significantly. The population is estimated at 20,000 - 23,000 with an annual harvest of more than 3,000.

There was even a wild turkey trotting around toll booths at the 14B interchange of the Turnpike in Jersey City last year....something I would never believed possible just a few years ago.

Turkeys on the Turnpike

Fishing on The Jersey Shore

Don't Miss Out on the Striped Bass and Bluefish Run along The Jersey Shore

November is an exciting time for both the beach and boat angler as the migration of striped bass and bluefish along The Jersey Shore will reach its peak. The largest concentrations of both of these species will be found this month and famous "Jersey Blitzes" will continue. Fishermen will also have an opportunity at targeting and landing some of the biggest bass and bluefish of the season.

Striper

As air temperatures get colder and water temperatures drop on The Jersey Shore, the greatest activity and feeding takes place as falling water temperatures are the impetus that triggers striped bass and bluefish to feed as they bulk up for their migration to the south.Grady White Boats

During November it will not be uncommon to land stripers that will weigh in excess of 30 pounds and bluefish that will flirt with the 15 pound mark. On average however most striped bass will range in size from 10-25 pounds and bluefish will average from 8-10 pounds. As a matter of fact, last week a 12 year old girl just caught a 48 pound striper off of Cape May...a state junior record!  The world record is 78 lbs caught near Atlantic City.

During the first several weeks of the month inshore boat action for stripers and blues will occur anywhere from just outside the inlet to one mile off the beach. Look for visual signs of surface commotion along with diving gulls, gannets, and terns that will mark the locations of the pods. In the surf look for bait that is tight to the beach in your location. If no bait is there, move to another spot. Latter in the month trolling deep anywhere from 30-70 feet of water will consistently put trophy catches on board at this time of year.

Residential and Commercial Growth in Barnegat

New Homes in Barnegat continuing to be built.

Experts project Ocean County's population will grow at nearly triple the rate of the rest of the state through 2016.Barnegat, NJ

A study by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Division of Labor Market and Demographic Research found that the county's population increased from 208,470 in 1970 to an estimated 573,678 in 2009. This 175.2 percent increase in population far exceeded the state's growth rate of 21.5 percent during that same period.

The study also projected that Ocean County will continue to grow at a faster rate, at 11 percent, than the state's 4.6 percent in the decade between 2006 and 2016. And by then, the study said, it will be the fifth most populous county in the state.

If any substantial future growth does happen in southern Ocean County, much of it would likely happen in Barnegat Township.

Since 1970, the township's populations has jumped from 1,539 to 22,643 - an increase of 1,371 percent. And the township still has 2,500 to 3,000 housing units already approved that have yet to be built.

Even through the economic downturn, 120 to 150 homes a year have been built. Development is still very active in Barnegat and in all likelihood will continue.

There are restrictions on development in Barnegat, such as ordinances regulating building height - to prevent high rises - and state restrictions on where growth can occur. The township's state-regulated "growth zone" encompasses the Ocean Acres section of the township and some land west of the Garden State Parkway and recently opened parkway entrance/exit at Exit 67 has already started attracting new businesses, such as a CVS, Wawa and is expected to attract even more commercial businesses.

Mortgage Rates Start To Climb

If there are folks out there waiting to refinance their mortgage or to buy a home in the hopes those mortgage rates would go down even further may have lost their opportunity.Generic Graph

Mortgage rates have been at or near record lows, jumped this week to their highest level since August, according to Freddie Mac's weekly survey, released Thursday.

Rates on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage leaped to an average 4.39% for the week ending Nov. 18, its highest rate since early August, up from 4.17% last week, according to Freddie Mac's survey of conforming mortgage rates. The mortgage averaged 4.83% a year ago.  The 15-year loan, climbed to 3.76 percent from 3.57 percent, the lowest level since that survey began in 1991.

A combination of factors, including a fear of inflation and reaction to the Federal Reserve's plan, known as QE2, to purchase up to $600 billion in government bonds, likely led to the spike.

To calculate average mortgage rates, Freddie Mac collects rates from lenders across the country on Monday through Wednesday each week. Rates often fluctuate significantly, even within a single day.

Rates on five-year adjustable-rate mortgages averaged 3.4 percent, up from 3.25 percent, the lowest rate on records dating to January 2005. Rates on one-year adjustable-rate home loans were unchanged at 3.26 percent.

The rates don't include the add-on fees known as points. One point is equal to 1 percent of the total loan.  Contact your mortgage broker or banker for more information.  If you don't have a mortgage broker, feel free to contact me for local brokers.

BUT, let's not forget that mortgage rates are still very, very low in historic terms.

2. The credit is equal to 100 percent of the first $2,000 spent per student each year and 25 percent of the next $2,000. Therefore, the full $2,500 credit may be available to a taxpayer who pays $4,000 or more in qualifying expenses for an eligible student.
3. The full credit is generally available to eligible taxpayers who make less than $80,000 or $160,000 formoney married couples filing a joint return. The credit is gradually reduced, however, for taxpayers with incomes above these levels.
4. Forty percent of the credit is refundable, so even those who owe no tax can get up to $1,000 of the credit for each eligible student as cash back.
5. The credit can be claimed for qualified expenses paid for any of the first four years of post-secondary education.
6. You cannot claim the tuition and fees tax deduction in the same year that you claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. You must choose to either take the credit or the deduction and should consider which is more beneficial for you.
Complete details on the American Opportunity Tax Credit and other key tax provisions of the Recovery Act are available at IRS.gov/recovery.

The History of Veterans Day

The History of Veterans Day

American FlagWorld War I - known at the time as "The Great War" - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of "the war to end all wars."

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..."

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation'"

Veteran AffairsThe Uniform Holiday Bill was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekendsUSAF for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patrioticUSN significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th 1975; President Gerald R. Ford returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans' service organizations and the American people.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not onlyUSMC preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
