Placing a Bet at the Diner

A New Jersey Senate panel will vet a bill that would create horse racing betting sites in the state's northern counties, and part of Ocean County, where electronic wagering terminals can be placed at a limited number of bars and restaurants.

The measure would essentially create mini off-track wagering sites, according to the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, N.J.

The measure limits the program to Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Passaic, Union, Morris, Somerset, Hunterdon, Warren, Sussex, and northern Middlesex and Ocean counties.

Host municipalities would collect a local impact fee of 1 percent from each betting machine's gross revenues. Other funds would go to horse racing purses and be used to prevent underage gambling, according to the Courier-Post.

Current legislation calls for 15 full-scale OTW (off-track wagering sites), but after more than 10 years since the law was enacted the only sites developed are in Woodbridge, Toms River and Vineland.

This annual extravaganza gives you a chance to be the judge of the best Manhattan and New England style chowder on Long Beach Island. Competition is fierce — and delicious.

Long Beach Island Open House Tour of Homes

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences presents the Long Beach Island Open House Tour of Homes. You'll tour seven exquisite homes that capture the history of Long Beach Island and its renowned architecture. Featuring houses chosen for the unique style, lush landscaping, dynamic interior décor, and sustainable building practices, this tour should be not missed! The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (LBIF) was established in 1948 as a non-profit institution by artist Boris Blai. It provided arts and educational opportunities for the quiet island community. Blai felt that through exceptional art classes, exhibits and other activities the LBIF could engage summer visitors and residents.

Over the years, the organization has developed through the generous support of its membership, which includes 600 families from the Mid-Atlanrtic states.

The organization is a vibrant community resource dedicated to providing arts, science and recreation programs to the members, residents and visitors to the area. The LBIF provides an After School Arts Education Program for nine area schools, an Artists' Residency and Retreat Program for New Jersey Artists, a Visiting Artists Program in Ceramics during the summer season, and special ceramics scholarships and residency opportunities.

Science is a key to understanding the world around us. The LBIF develops science related activities to serve thier members and the community.

Popcorn Park Zoon Rock to Adopt

The Associated Humane Societies and Popcorn Park will be holding Rock to Adopt this weekend to support animal adoption and the nonprofit organization.

Rock to Adopt is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Popcorn Park, 1 Humane Way, Forked River.

The family event will feature music by local artists, face painting, temporary tattoos and balloon designs. There also will be chair massages and fortune-telling for adults.

The Associated Humane Societies, founded in 1906, is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey. We comprise three shelters located in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls . Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park Zoo. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park Zoo is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds.

The Society is a not for profit and Popcorn Park is also a federally licensed zoo. The Society prides itself on thier devotion to the thousands of animals they care for annually and the chance for a better life they offer them.

The Popcorn Park Zoo gets its name because children can buy a box of popcorn to feed to some of the animals which helps fund the park.

3rd Annual Jazzy Scallop & Seafood Festival

In the mood for some good seafood? Look no further than the 3rd Annual Jazzy Scallop Seafood Festival. Held at the historic Viking Village at 19th & Bayview in Barnegat Light from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., this event features fresh seafood prepared by local chefs, cash bar for beer and wine, sushi and raw clam bar, local jazz musicians, a performance by the Surflight Theater and more.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of and can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce in Ship Bottom or at the Viking Village Shoppes in Barnegat Light. Proceeds will benefit the Southern Regional High School Scholarship Fund and the Surflight Theater.

Broiled Scallops (the easiest and best way to prepare)

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 pounds scallops
• 1 tablespoon garlic salt
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted
• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Directions

1. Turn broiler on.
2. Rinse scallop and place in a shallow baking pan. Sprinkle with garlic salt, melted butter or margarine and lemon juice.
3. Broil 6 to 8 minutes or until scallops start to turn golden. Remove from oven and serve with extra melted butter or margarine on the side for dipping.

It doesn't get any better!

 

 

Long Beach Island Stand Up Paddleboard Pro-Am Relay Race

Event: Long Beach Island Stand Up Paddleboard Pro-Am Relay Race July 17, 2011

Organizer: The New Jersey Windsurfing and Watersports Association.

Venue: Competition will take place within the cove at Bayview Park, 68th St., Brant Beach, Long Beach Island, New Jersey. (Little Egg Harbor). A limited number of SUP boards will be available on a first come first served basis.

Teams: Younger/Inexperienced Paddlers will be paired up with Older/Experienced Stand-Up PaddleSurfers. The race is open to men, women, and children age 10 years and older. All competitors are encouraged to join the NJWWA

Courses: A course circuit will be set within the harbor, between the boat channel and the shoreline. Marks may consist of buoys, no-wake markers, and islands.

• The Amateur/ First Leg will be a shortened course for the younger/less experienced part of the team, approximately 1/4 mile long.
• The Professional/ Second Leg will feature a bayside course designed to challenge the competitor's technical and athletic skills, approximately 1.0 mile long.

Start: LeMans style Beach Start with competitors standing in the water next to their board. Each competitor may be randomly assigned their starting station at the line. Amateur Younger/Inexperienced competitors will start first. You will be allowed 5 strokes to get on your feet and stand up. Each competitor must complete the course in a standing position on their board. Paddlers must follow the Race Committee's instructions. Final instructions will be announced prior to the start of the race.

Relay: After rounding the last mark, each Amateur competitor must paddle in towards the designated beach area and "high five" their partner, who will be waiting in the shallow water in the designated beach area. The choice is yours if you use the same or different equipment.

Finish: After rounding the last mark, paddlers will finish in a standing position, leaving the board on shore, running to the finish line carrying their paddle. Each paddler must cross the finish line. Competitors must not leave the finish area until their place, name and number, has been recorded by the scorer. Top finishers will be encouraged to perform an SUP Talent Exhibition.

Lighthouse International Film Festival on LBI

Long Beach Island will present 65 films as part of the Lighthouse International Film Festival, June 3-5, 2011.

Securing some key programming from Sundance, Toronto, South-by-Southwest and the Tribeca film festivals, including "Gun Hill Road," "Prairie Love," "Surrogate Valentine," and "The Trollhunter," the festival will open with "Salvation Boulevard" (Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connelly, Marisa Tomei and Ed Harris) and close with Michael Winterbottom's "The Trip."

The Lighthouse International Film Festival is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to showcasing new and innovative films and fostering the next generation of filmmakers. The festival offers three days of films, panels, Q&A's, networking, parties and surfing, and draws some of the industry's top film critics, producers and distributors.

The festival also seeks to serve the community by presenting unique programs that inspire, engage and challenge a diverse audience through the art of film.

The Lighthouse International Film Festival was founded by a collection of filmmakers, film critics and film industry professionals who share a passion for film and wanted to create an event aimed first and foremost at film enthusiasts.

The 2011 festival will present feature films, shorts, documentaries and family films, as well as panel discussions with leading film industry professionals. Simply Bassing Surf Tournament

The 10th annual Simply Bassing Surf Tournament, opening up this Saturday, May 7. Running to June 26, this tournament is conducted by several of the bait and tackle shops on Long Beach Island.

Open only to LBI shore-based anglers, cash prizes are awarded to the top eight fish of the tournament. There is a $20 registration fee, which can be handed in at most island shops. Eight weeks of stripper fishing competition: Last year's 1st place finisher won $1,000.00

Scrooge, The Musical in Manahawkin

A Christmas Carol turns into Scrooge, The Musical! 

The newly formed Shore Repertory Theatre Company (formerly the Strand Theatre Ensemble), presents their 9th annual production of the holiday musical extravaganza, Scrooge the Musical this year at the 800 seat, state of the art Ocean First Theater at the Stafford Township Arts Center (STAC) in Manahawkin.

Scrooge, previously presented for the last 8 years at The Strand Theater in Lakewood, is now at The Ocean First Theater/STAC in order to provide more family friendly ticket pricing as well as plentiful parking for audience members.

Scrooge is based on A Christmas Carol, the novella by Charles Dickens first published in 1843. The story tells of sour and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge's ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.

 The book was written and published in early Victorian era Britain when it was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced.

The tale was pirated immediately, was adapted several times to the stage, and has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print and has been adapted to film, opera, and other media.

This years Scrooge is directed by New Jersey Association of Community Theaters award winner Jan Topoleski and features viewers favorite Gary Alan Powell reprising his role as Ebenezer Scrooge for his ninth consecutive year.

Scrooge boasts a cast of nearly 50 adults and children. Audience members will be delighted by the same elaborate sets, costumes, and special effects that have made Scrooge an Ocean County tradition for thousands of theatre-goers.

Performances are on December 17 at 7:30pm & December 19, at 1:30 pm & 6:00pm.

Stafford Twp & LBI Firemen's Turkey Bowl

Firefighters from the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Company and Long Beach Island fire departments will square off Saturday night in the fourth annual Turkey Bowl football game at Southern Regional High School.

But this year, organizers decided to turn the event into a fundraiser. Stafford Township Assistant Fire Chief Jack Johnson said Capt. Heidi Michael suggested at the end of last year's game that the 2010 event should be a venue for collecting food and funds for local foodbanks.  

What: The fourth annual Firemen's Turkey Bowl

When: Saturday Nov. 20, 7 p.m.

Where: Southern Regional High School varsity football field, Route 9, Stafford Township. Spectators are asked to bring a canned good and $1 for the Stafford Volunteer Fire Company's Scholarship Fund

Stafford Township is in Ocean County, New Jersey. The township population was 22,532 and was formed by Royal Charter on March 3, 1750. It was incorporated as one of New Jersey's first 104 townships by on February 21, 1798, and became part of the newly-formed Ocean County on February 15, 1850.

Stafford Township is the gateway to the resort communities on Long Beach Island, with Route 72 providing the sole road access, ending in Ship Bottom as it crosses Manahawkin Bay via the Manahawkin Bay Bridge. The Garden State Parkway and Route 9 pass through the township and provide access to Route 72 which would allow an easy commute of about make at 1.5 hours to Philadelphia and 2 hours to downtown Manhattan.

Neil Sedaka, the iconic pop singer, pianist, and songwriter will be at the Ocean County Library, Toms River Branch on November 7, at 3:00.  His career has spanned over 50 years, during which time he has written many songs for himself and others.

Between 1960 and 1962, Sedaka had eight Top 40 hits, The British Invasion of 1964 eroded Sedaka's career, and from then until 1966, only three of his singles made it into the Top 100. Although Sedaka's stature as a recording artist was at a low ebb in the late 1960s, he was able to maintain his career through songwriting. He had hit songs recorded by The Monkees, The 5th Dimension and Frankie Valli.

In the 1970's, Sedaka wrote songs for and/or recorded with such icons as Elton John, Elvis Presley and wrote a huge hit for The Captain and Tennille.  In 1975, Sedaka recorded a new version of "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do". The 1962 original #1 hit was an upbeat pop song, while the remake was a ballad and it hit #8 on the Hot 100 in early 1976, making him the first artist--and after nearly 35 years, he remains the only one--to hit the U.S. Top 10 twice with entirely different versions and arrangements of the same song. Sedaka's second version of "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart in 1976.

Sedaka is also composer of "Is This the Way to Amarillo" written when he moved his family to the UK in the early 1970s. It reached only #18 on the UK charts in 1971, but then hit #1 for seven consecutive weeks on the UK singles charts when reissued in 2005, thanks to a music video starring comedian Peter Kay. It was Britain's most popular single for the year.

Sedaka continues to tour and write music to this day.  He will be at the Ocean County, Toms River Branch to perform his latest album, "Waking Up is Hard to Do" which is a collection of classic Neil Sedaka hits that have been reinvented as Children's songs.
