Striper Season Opens

New Jersey's has 83 miles of bayshores and 127 miles of Atlantic coastline where Saltwater Stripers are plentiful. The World Record forRecord Striper Saltwater Striper was caught just south of Ocean County in Atlantic City following days of September Nor'easter storming in 1982. The fish measured 53 inches in length with a 34 1/2 inch girth, and was estimated to be 20 - 22 years old. Its 78 pound 8 oz. weight earned it the IGFA all-tackle record!

The striped bass begin their annual run in early spring after spawning in the Chesapeake Bay, The Roanoke and the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. This usually takes place when the water temperature hits 60 degrees. Then they leave the estuaries and begin their trek northward towards New England. Foraging all along the New Jersey coastline and the Delaware Bay on the way. The reverse takes place in the fall on their way back to their wintering grounds in North Carolina.

The closed seasons for striped bass are: January 1 through February 28 in all waters except the Atlantic Ocean from 0-3 miles offshore; and April 1 through May 31 in the Delaware River and its tributaries from the Route 1 Bridge in Trenton downstream to and including the Salem River and its tributaries. Any striped bass caught during a closed season must be released immediately. The possession or killing of a striped bass during a closed season is a violation of the law and will result in prosecution.

Also note that fishermen may possess one additional striped bass per day under the Striped Bass Bonus Fish Program subject to the following: 1) the angler must apply for and receive a fish possession card in advance of attempting to take a bonus fish; and 2) the minimum size limit for a striped bass taken under the bonus program is 28 inches

Stripers start showing in the back bays Mid March by June the spring run is in full swing. The striped bass are migrating up the coast to spawn in the hudson river around mid may when the water temps approach 60 degrees. prime water temps are 50 to 70 for stripers. The nor'east storms are what many surfcasters keep a close watch on. the jetty hoppers are out day and night. most beach rats follow the tell tale signs of birds feeding indicating a blitz of bass and or blues.

Irish Arts Day in Harvey Cedars

AmergaelIrish Art Day at the Maris Stella Retreat and Conference Center, Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Island.  Irish Art Day features artwork, music and dance.  Admission and refreshments are free.  A multimedia program about the Book of Kells will be conducted also.

Music by Odes and Aires starts with harping starting sometime around 1:00 PM with piping just after. Come have some soda bread and tap your feet to our jigs and reels.

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure.

The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colors, enliven the manuscript's pages. Many of these minor decorative elements are imbued with Christian symbolism and so further emphasize the themes of the major illustrations.

The manuscript takes its name from the Abbey of Kells that was its home for centuries. Today, it is on permanent display at the Trinity College Library, Dublin.

Irish Art Day takes place on February 26th at the Maris Stella Retreat and Conference Center, Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Island, 72nd Street and Long Beach Blvd, Harvey Cedars, between 1 and 4 PM.

Seal'ed with a Kiss

On February 19th, the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Interpretative Center, will be holding a seminar on the winter Seal Barnegat Light Karl Hesspopulation of seals and the work the Marine Mammal Stranding Center does to rehabilitate injured marine life. In conjunction with Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce's LBI Chocolate Week, each attendee will receive a chocolate kiss. Information: 609-494-2016

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC)is a private non-profit organization based in Brigantine, New Jersey. Since the Center's founding in 1978, staff and volunteers have responded to over 3610 calls for stranded whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles that washed ashore on New Jersey beaches.  These animals range from a 5 lb. Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle to a 25-ton Humpback Whale (both of which are endangered species).

Barnegat Lighthouse was re-illuminated on January 1, 2009 - exactly 150 years to the day that it was originally lit in 1859. Thanks to the Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse, the nonprofit group dedicated to preserving and promoting the park, funds were raised to purchase a new Coast Guard-approved lens. The new light creates a single beam that can be visible for up to 22 nautical miles. In 1927, the original lens was removed, and was replaced by a lightship anchored off the coast of Barnegat light. The original lens is still on display down the road at the Barnegat Lighthouse Historical Society's Museum.

A panoramic view of Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island awaits visitors at the top of Barnegat Lighthouse. The lighthouse is open daily from 10 AM to 4:30 PM (weather permitting) from Memorial Day through Labor Day and weekends in the winter. There is a $1 fee per person to enter the lighthouse from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Children under 12 are free and must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors can also catch the views from the top without climbing the 217 steps thanks to four cameras that transmit live images of the view to a display in the adjacent Interpretive Center.

Long Island to Host Major Surfing Event

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour has never had a stop on the East Coast. That is going to change with the latest announcement from Quiksilver and ASP.Jersey Shore Homes for Sale Karl Hess

The Quiksilver Pro New York will be the sixth stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour, with the event taking place on Long Island's Long Beach from Sept. 4-15.  Other ASP World Tour stops include French Polynesia, Australia, South Africa, California, France, Hawaii and Portugal.

The event in New York will be the first of its kind. Not only will it be the first time this event has stopped on the East Coast, but it will also be the first time that professional surfing will have a $1 million dollar prize purse for competitors.

Long Beach wasn't arbitrarily chosen. A 15-year independent wave study of western Long Island was conducted by Surfline.com, a leading forecaster of wave and surf conditions. The results of the study showed that early September is one of the best times for sizable surf and swells.

The surf climate in Western Long Island is greatly affected by the underwater Hudson Canyon offshore, which can turn average surf into very high quality surf comparable to many of the best surf spots in the world on the right day," Sean Collins, chief forecaster and president of Surfline.com, said in the announcement.

Finally, a major surfing event north of the Mason-Dixon Line, with the first million dollar payday! One thing though, the average water temperature on Long Island in September is in the low 70's.  Not exactly Oahu, so I'd recommend a shorty!

Ocean County Bald Eagles

The Jersey Shore becomes a haven for the American Bald Eagle
Bald Eagle in Snow
Bald eagles were once plentiful in New Jersey and
Ocean County. But by 1982, there was only one known nest and that nest had failed for 8 successive years. A group of scientists in the Endangered and Non-Game Species Program (ENSP) of the New Jersey Fish, Game and Wildlife department decided to do something about it. Through dedication, the ENSP re-introduced bald eagles into New Jersey.

New Jersey's eagles, which reached a record population of 333 birds and 82 eagle pairs actively laying eggs last year, according to an annual report released by the state earlier this month is evidence of a comeback.

That's a dramatic increase from 30 years ago, when only one nest remained in the state - with New Jersey's population of eagles nearly wiped out by habitat loss, human disturbance and the widespread use of the pesticide DDT.

Since 1982, the state has monitored the bald eagle population. The data that they have collected has provided important information about the health of the eagles and the health of the environment. Also, the data has been used to protect critical habitat for bald eagles.

The Trust for Public Lands (TPL), a preservation group, has purchased 243 acres which is surrounded by 588 acres of previously protected land on The Jersey Shore. The Trust used a combination of donations and loans amounting to $550,500, and will be reimbursed by the Fish and Wildlife Service through a $35.7 million federal appropriation earmarked for refuge acquisitions and wetlands grants to benefit migrating birds throughout the nation.

Peregrine falcons, bald eagles, northern harriers, osprey, and red-shouldered hawks are among the birds that roost in the tidal marsh and forest that make up what is commonly called the Murray Grove property.

The land is located between Barnegat Bay and the famous Unitarian Universalist retreat in the Lanoka Harbor section of Lacey Township. Naturalists and fishermen know the area best as a complex mix of pools, mud flats and waterways that include Hancy's Pond, Stumpy Pond Creek, Bony Creek, Wire Creek Pond and Stouts Creek.

Because of the critical importance of this property to the health of Barnegat Bay and the the refuge, TPL assembled funding to purchase and hold the property until federal funds are available for adding it to the refuge.
