And Castles Made of Sand Melt into the Sea…Eventually

Shored Up, the new documentary about the barrier islands of the U.S., featuring Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Surfers, scientists, politicians and residents help bring us a birds' eye view of the beauty and danger of the living in these low-lying communities on our ocean's edge.

Shored Up is a documentary that asks tough questions about our coastal communities and our relationship to the land. What will a rising sea do to our homes, our businesses, and the survival of our communities? Can we afford to pile enough sand on our shores to keep the ocean at bay? In Long Beach Island, New Jersey and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, surfers, politicians, scientists and residents are racing to answer these questions. Beach engineering has been our only approach so far, but is there something else out there to be explored? Our development of the coastlines put us in a tough predicament, and it’s time to start looking for solutions.

LBI Real Estate Karl Hess

Long Beach Island will be the setting of a play written by Zach Braff and will show in NYC this summer.

Zach Braff's new play, All New People, will conclude New York's Second Stage Theatre's current season. The show will begin erformances on June 28 before an official opening in mid-July, according to TheatreMania.com

The play takes place in the dead of winter in the summer vacation getaway of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, where Charlie, heartbroken, just wants some time away from the rest of the world, but finds his solitude is interrupted by a motley parade of misfits who show up and change his plans.

Braff received both WGA and Independent Spirit Award nominations for his screenplay for the feature film Garden State. His stage credits, as a performer, include Paul Weitz's Trust at Second Stage and Twelfth Night and Macbeth for the Public Theater. He may be best known for his portrayal of Dr. John "J.D." Ship Bottom Circle to be Developed

The entrance to Long Beach Island has been marred for almost 20 years by an unused gas station. The plot of land in Ship Bottom is located between Eighth and Ninth streets and adjacent to the end of Route 72 eastbound.

Image courtesy of AC PressAfter the closure of the gas station, groundwater contamination was discovered at the site. The cleanup and remediation process has been going on for 10 years. This parcel of land, located at the gateway to Long Beach Island includes two parcels which werre purchased in 2004 and in 2008.

The demolishing the of building and trying to finish the remediation, which will take a couple of more months, before submitting plans probably for the April meeting of the Planning Board.

The developer of the project has said that "it's pretty much going to be an old business with a very new twist," but was hesitant to completely explain before plans are submitted to the borough.

The land, across the street from the iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop of Ship Bottom has been an eyesore for decades; it's about time someone with a vision has finally decided to use the space more effectively.

Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven to Remain Open

surflight theatreThe Surflight Theatre, in Beach Haven, will remain open for at least another season after the recently hired chief financial officer revealed that he had miscalculated the debt owed by the group.  It was originally estimated that the theatre owed more than $500,000, but that approximation was off by about $370,000.

The theatre company officials said several measures will help keep the Surflight open through the off-season.  The theatre will not have to make principal payments on its bonds for the next 6 months and more cash will be used to pay down short-term loans.  The top staff at the theatre will also be working without pay for one year.

The Surflight Theatre first opend it's "doors" in 1950 in Beach Haven Crest, on Long Beach Island, in a shaky 2,200-seat tent with a cast of 60, a 12-piece orchestra and a season only 3 weeks long.  Today the Theatre seats over 450 and has had total attendance of Surflight performances over 60,000 in a year.

Upcoming shows include Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" and concerts by Rich Little, The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble and Puccini's "Tosca" presented by the Center Stage Opera.
