Black Sea Bass Season Reopens on The Jersey Shore

 Black Sea bass season reopened on Monday, November 1^st and will go through December 31^st. Many area party-boats, including Carolyn Ann III out of Barnegat, went jigging for striped bass on Saturday afternoon with a handful of customers. They caught bass to 23 pounds and large bluefish.

The black sea bass is a type of Grouper found more commonly in northern than in southern ranges as it inhabits the entire East Coast. They can sometimes be found in inshore waters like Barnegat Bay and off The Jersey Shore in waters up to a depth of 425 feet. They spend most of their time close to the sea floor and are often congregated around bottom formations such as rocks, man-made reefs, wrecks, jetties, piers, and bridge pilings.

Black sea bass are highly sought after by recreational and commercial fisherman, and thus can be over-fished. Quotas have been set to help limit the over-fishing of black sea bass.  Recreational black sea bass on The Jersey Shore has a possession limit of 25 fish per day and a minimum size of 12.5 inches.
